HEATHER McLEAN, MSc., P.Ag.

Heather provides professional advice to farming operations in all aspects of poultry, hog and fur production. She has over 18 years of varied experience working directly with the farm community and grew up on a hog farm in Newfoundland. She has extensive experience in developing production-related publications and delivering information through one-on-one contact, and workshops and seminars.

Prior to joining Perennia, Heather was a poultry specialist with the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture where she also sat on the Board of Directors of the Atlantic Poultry Research Institute. Following this, she was a field representative at ACA Co-operative Ltd. for nine years working directly with member-owners. Most recently she worked as an agricultural consultant where she assessed sites for agricultural production suitability and provided support and research for numerous projects, including marketing and impact studies.

Heather is known for her practical and direct approach to get the desired results on farm. Her specialty areas include: mink and poultry nutrition, production and animal husbandry; improving bird and pelt quality; optimizing producer returns; researching/applying practical innovative management techniques; and understanding of general business management issues including human resource and finances.  Heather is involved with the Nova Scotia Biosecurity Implementation Program and believes that strong biosecurity programs are elemental to the success of our agricultural industries. She is currently a member of the Annapolis Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Agriculture and Agri-Food Committee.

Heather has a B.Sc. in Animal Science from the former Nova Scotia Agricultural College and an M.Sc. in Poultry Nutrition from the University of Manitoba.
