Vine Pruning in cool climate viticulture: principles and techniques for good pruning practices in prevention and management of trunk diseases
Part of the ‘From Grapes to Wines: Cool Climate’ webinar series, join Perennia’s Viticulture Specialist Francisco Diez and Marco Simonit from Simonit & Sirch, Italy for the upcoming session ‘Vine Pruning in cool climate viticulture: principles and techniques for good pruning practices in prevention and management of trunk diseases’.
SESSION DESCRIPTION:
Grapevine Trunk diseases are widespread all over the world and growing. They have become a serious threat for viticulture. Among the ways to reduce trunk diseases spread, good pruning practices and techniques are important prevention resources.
In the last 30 years SIMONIT&SIRCH has developed and fine-tuned a Vine Pruning Method based on four simple principles that are applicable to all vine training systems. The session will provide an overview of this method and its application in cool climate, with a look on the future perspectives and new opportunities connected to climate change.
SPEAKER DETAILS:
Marco Simonit, from Gorizia in Friuli Venezia Giulia, a passion for the vine since he was a young boy.
Oscar del Vino 2012 from Italian Association Sommelier as Best Agronomist Viticulturist, he created the SIMONIT&SIRCH pruning Method with his friend and partner Pierpaolo Sirch, which has codified the correct vine pruning rules and is applied in many of the most important wineries in the world.
Born in 1966, family of peasant origin, he worked for 10 years (as a young) agronomist for the Collio Wines Consortium. , Today he is the CEO of SIMONIT&SIRCH VINE MASTER PRUNERS, the only group in the world structured in the sector of training for personnel assigned to manual pruning of vineyards, consultant for over 150 prestigious companies in 14 countries (Italy, Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, USA, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia, UK and Hungary), including the legendary Château d’Yquem, Château La Tour , Moët & Chandon, Roederer, Domaines Leroy, Domanie Leflaive.
In recent years, with his team, he has radically renewed and given value to a hitherto humble profession and created a new professional figure, that of the “Pruning Tutor”, the VINE MASTER PRUNERS, highly trained pruners, who they assist in the vineyard and train the staff of the companies. In recognition of this commitment, the Nonino Risit d’Aur Barbatella d’Oro 2016 Award arrives, with this motivation: “Their work is masterful and is a great example for the new generations”. With SIMONIT&SIRCH he has trained over 10,000 specialized workers on all continents and has established scientific collaborations with numerous of the most authoritative Italian and foreign research centers and universities. In 2009 he created the Italian Vine Pruning School, a permanent training center in partnership with important institutions, the only one of its kind at an international level, with 15 offices in the main Italian wine regions.
He is the author of two absolutely innovative Vine Pruning Manuals, dedicated to the Guyot (whose French version in 2018 won what is considered the Nobel Prize for wine literature, or the OIV 2018 International Prize in the Viticulture section) and to the spurred cordon, published by L’Informatore Agrario.
He has also developed the technique of surgery applied to vines, which allows you to eliminate decayed wood and cure Esca disease to save the vineyards without uprooting them. The importance of this technique is relevant above all to safeguard the longevity of the plants, one of the most important objectives for Simonit, and to guarantee the quality and recognisability of great wines.
Among his major international projects, the creation of the DUTE Diplôme Universitaire de Taille and d’Epamprage, the first and only University Diploma of Pruning and selection of shoot thinning in the world, launched in Bordeaux in 2016, and promoted by the ISVV – Institut des Sciences de la Vigne et du Vin de l’Université de Bordeaux in collaboration with SIMONIT&SIRCH – Maîtres Tailleurs de Vigne, the French branch of the company it created, over 20 years ago, in Friuli.
Called as a speaker at international Conference, in 2018 he was the only Italian among the international speakers at the IX Symposium Masters of Wine in Logroño in La Roja, Spain.
In 2021 SIMONIT&SIRCH launched the world’s first e-learning Academy dedicated to Vine Pruning www.vinemasterpruners.com
