Project Description

SHANE WOOD, M. SC., A. Ag.

Forage Specialist/Research Program Coordinator

Shane is the Forage Specialist and Research Program Coordinator at Perennia. As the Forage Specialist, he provides advice on best practices for hay and silage production as well as pasture management to producers in NS and will be working on forage small plot and on-farm research.

As Research Program Coordinator, Shane works closely with the production specialists team to help manage on-farm and small plot research projects, identify and develop research proposals and assist with outreach activities.

Shane completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and Environmental Studies with a major in Agro-Environmental Sciences at McGill University in 2014. He continued at McGill University and completed his Master’s of Science in Plant Science in 2017, which focused on forage quality prediction models.

Before working at Perennia, Shane worked as a Research Agronomist in BC and MB, where he completed crop variety and product efficacy (pesticides, fertilizers, plant growth regulators, etc.) trials on horticulture and field crops. His Master’s thesis looked at validating and creating models predicting pre-harvest forage quality in alfalfa-grass mixtures using simple field measurements. He also has experience working in horticulture crop production from his time at the McGill Horticulture Research Centre while attending McGill University.

Shane enjoys helping producers find ways to increase their farms’ profitability and sustainability.
