Project Description
CORN
Corn acreage hovers around 36,000. Approximately, ½ is taken off as silage in one form or another. The other 18,000 acres is taken as grain corn. Many parts of Nova Scotia are on the fringe of being able to produce quality dry grain corn due to the short, cool, frost free growing season. Silage maturities depending on the location and storage method are normally limited to 2,500 CHU and less. Dry corn hybrids are usually limited to 2400 CHU and less. There are many exceptions to this depending on the micro climate, and variety. There are a few pest problems that pop up from time to time including Western Bean Cutworm, Cutworm, Wireworm and Northern Corn Leaf Blight.
