HOPS AND TREE NUTS

Tree Nuts

The most widely planted tree nut species in Nova Scotia are heartnut, hazelnut, Persian walnut, and chestnut. Consider the local climate, soils, site, marketing opportunities, and intentions for the planting as a business or a hobby before establishing a tree nut orchard. Market opportunities currently exist in Atlantic Canada for small quantities of tree nuts. Heartnut is the best adapted species for Atlantic Canada conditions and is recommended as having the greatest commercial potential for tree nut crops. Please note that tree nut orchards take a relatively long time to reach maturity compared to tree fruit crops. The most suitable areas to grow tree nut crops are in established tree fruit and grape production areas of Atlantic Canada.
