Best Management Practices in Greenhouse Soils with Judson Reid
July 3, 2023 3:00 pm to July 5, 2023 4:00 pm
July 3, 2023
This event is being held as part of the On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) program. The goals of the program are to encourage on-farm sequestration of carbon and reduction in greenhouse gases through the implementation of improved nitrogen management, enhanced cover crop adoption, and the normalization of rotational grazing. Session Description
Soil health in protected spaces can be difficult to manage. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by focusing on split nitrogen applications and building soil health by incorporating cover crops will result in resilient soils that are able to support production well into the future. Â
Perennia’s Protected Crop Specialist Talia Plaskett and Cornell University’s Judson Reid are hosting a series of field days across the province, focusing on implementing beneficial management practices for soils in high tunnels and caterpillars in both organic and conventional systems. We hope you will join us at one of the hosting farms for what is sure to be a lively discussion full of learning!Â

Guest Speaker
Judson Reid
Senior Extension Associate at Cornell UniversityÂ
Judson Reid is a Senior Extension Associate with Cornell University Cooperative Extension. In this position, he manages a series of research and education projects for greenhouse, high tunnel and field production of fresh market vegetables. Judson is involved in the evaluation of grafting on tomatoes, biological pest control, cover cropping techniques and soil nutrient management in protected agriculture. Judson was an invited guest at three Perennia webinars this winter, which you can find here:Â
- Managing Nitrogen in Protected, Soil-Based SystemsÂ
- Managing Nitrogen in Protected, Soil-Based Systems Part 2: Planning for Split Applications

Moderator
Talia Plaskett
Protected Crop Specialist with PerenniaÂ
Talia’s role at Perennia supports protected crop production across the province. She graduated from the University of Guelph in 2015 and spent the following five years working at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre. She gained experience in plant pathology, breeding and production, all while working in a newly constructed hydroponic tomato greenhouse. She joined the Agri-Services team in June 2020 and has spent the last few years understanding the scope of protected production here in Nova Scotia. Talia is excited to continue to strengthen the resource bank, knowledge base and community surrounding protected production across the province.Â
