Hear from three guest speakers, including Brian Newcombe from Cornwallis Farms in Port Williams, Chryseis Modderman, Crops and Manure Management specialist from University of Minnesota Twin Cities and Nancy Bohl Bormann PhD from the University of Minnesota as they share strategies and real-world application practices. Whether you are a seasoned professional or curious about sustainable poultry manure management practices, this event is for you! Enjoy a complimentary lunch as well!

Guest Speakers

Brian Newcombe

Brian Newcombe is a co-owner and operator of Cornwallis Farms in Port Williams, Nova Scotia with his brother Craig, nephew David and son Evan. They are ninth and tenth-generation farmers on a 263-year-old operation that now includes 850 000 broilers, 20 000 layers, 75 cow dairy herd, feed mill, soybean extruder with oil press and 1700 acres of corn, wheat, soybean rotation, as well as forages and cover crops. The farm has used minimum and no-till methods for the last 30 years to help prevent soil erosion and build the health of the soil. Brian has been highlighted in Strip-Till Famer for his efforts and innovation in conservation and regenerative farming practices. Recently, Cornwallis Farms has invested in composting infrastructure, specifically for poultry litter. With the use of a Aeromaster PT 130, the farm mixes poultry litter, straw and sawdust in 200 windows to produce a finished compost.

Chryseis Modderman

Chryseis Modderman has been with University of Minnesota Extension since 2018 as an Extension Educator. Her office is in Morris, MN and she is part of the crops team, focusing on manure nutrient management and the power of poo. She is originally from a farm family in west-central Minnesota, and prior to working at UMN, she was a research technician at North Dakota State University. When she’s not elbow-deep in her work, she enjoys time at the lake, knitting and reading.

Nancy Bohl Bormann

Nancy Bohl Bormann recently graduated with her PhD from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in the Soil, Water and Climate Department. She received her B.S. from Iowa State University and M.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her main research project was working on the development and implementation of a United States manure nutrient test database called ManureDB. Previously she worked in the nutrient management field for fourteen years as a CCA with The Maschhoffs. Nancy is the Kossuth County Soil and Water Conservation District Chair, an Iowa State University Northern Research Farm Board Member and a member of the AgGateway Laboratory Data Standardization Working Group. She and her husband Matt also grain farm in north central Iowa.
