Session Description

This session will include information on the basic guidelines of good grazing management and information on how perennial pasture plants grow both above and below ground, how that relates to soil health and how grazing management decisions create more productive and higher quality forages. 

We’ll also discuss how to modify management when weather gets very dry, hot or there are high rainfall events. Once we have better pasture growth and quality, we can focus on methods to maximize pasture intake by the herd or flock to lower feed costs while using the livestock as the primary tool for improving plant and soil health.

Sarah Flack
Sarah is an author and consultant specializing in providing practical information on agronomy and farm business planning to grass-based livestock farmers, organizations, institutions and individuals. She lived with her family in New Zealand, then moved to Vermont where she grew up on a farm that used management-intensive grazing and mob stocking. She later studied Holistic Planned Grazing and pursued graduate studies on grazing and farm management. She has written extensively about grass farming, has participated in several research projects and is known for teaching workshops that take a practical approach to applying the science of grazing combined with careful consideration of farm income and profitability.

Sarah has successfully helped many farmers create positive change in their pastures, soils, livestock, finances and farm-family quality of life. Sarah is the author of The Art and Science of Grazing as well as co-authored publications including Vermont Grass-Based Beef Profitability: Lessons and Budgets, The Grass-Based Dairy Production Manual, and most recently Commercial Pasture Based Sheep Production in Vermont, as well as numerous articles.
