Smartphone application for immediate feedback

Description: Crop load management for apples is an art and a science. Lately, research has brought more clarity to this complex management period by developing models with predictions. The models are helpful, but they require data that is time-consuming to record. We’ll show you how we use the smartphone application in the field as a handheld tool for digital data input. The app has key features for apple measurements but is flexible for other crops too. Better data can lead to time savings and identification of optimum management opportunities.

Weather Stations in Horticulture

Description: Decisions surrounding crop management are difficult to make without having a full picture of what is happening in the growing environment. The growing environment (e.g. temperature, humidity, wind) dictates harvest times, peak insect infestations and the onset of economically important disease. Being able to accurately track and anticipate these key components in crop production is extremely helpful in understanding the best times to apply sprays, scout and employ cultural management. Follow four of our extension specialists as they tour crops across Nova Scotia and discuss the benefits of incorporating weather stations into your farm.

GPS Technology in Wild Blueberry Production

Description: Wild blueberries are a unique crop with particular production challenges. Fields are often odd sizes and shapes with rough terrain, which can make efficient field operations difficult. This session will explore the uses of GPS technology in wild blueberry production and how it can make operations like spraying and harvesting more efficient to reduce input use and crop damage.
