SOYBEAN

Soybean acreage in Nova Scotia is estimated to be about 15,000, with yields ranging from 1.2-1.5 mt/ac. Most of these soybeans are exported, whole/raw through the port of Halifax. A smaller amount are either roasted on-farm or custom roasted and fed on-farm. The soybean price can be forward contracted through a number of brokers in the Atlantic Provinces. This has taken some of the price risk out of growing soybeans. Most of the soybeans grown in Nova Scotia are herbicide resistant varieties ranging in maturity from 2100-2700 CHU.
